Located just a few blocks from Barcelona's central square, the Hotel Indigo Barcelona Plaza Catalunya is a property that offers disabled travelers a high level of in-room accessibility in one of the city's most convenient locations. Wheelchair Accessible Hotel Room at Hotel Indigo Barcelona Plaza Catalunya
My “1 Queen Bed Accessible” room was a standard room type, but it felt anything but standard! Spacious and with lovely design touches, the first-floor guest room (number 112) featured a large floor-to-ceiling window that invited large amounts of natural light into the space. Entry to the room was via a door that was 32 inches wide, and had two peepholes at heights of 59 inches and 47.5 inches.

The queen size bed was comfortable and provided for a relaxing sleep experience. It was accessible on all sides from my power wheelchair. The bed height was 27 inches measured from the floor to the top of the mattress, with 4 inches of clearance underneath. The mattress was 13 inches tall, and the boxspring was 10 inches tall.

Lighting controls, power outlets and USB ports were found directly alongside the bed and above the nightstand. The bedside power outlet allowed me to easily charge my wheelchair and other electronics. Note that electricity in Spain is delivered at 230 volts. Travelers from the U.S. and North America may need to use a step-down power transformer to charge wheelchairs that use the 120V standard. Please see the guide to charging a power wheelchair abroad for more information and tips. My wheelchair has a dual-voltage charger, so I plugged right into the wall (with a universal plug adapter) and charged without issue.
On the wall opposite the bed was a wall-mounted television, desk, and mini fridge. The desk was 30 inches high, with 27.5 inches of clearance below. The room did offer a connecting room feature, though I am not certain what type of room it connects to specifically.

Wheelchair Accessible Bathroom with Roll-in Shower at Hotel Indigo Barcelona Plaza Catalunya
The beautifully appointed bathroom is really where this hotel stood out, with all of the accessibility features that I needed to feel safe and secure.

The bathroom featured two roll under sinks with easy-to-operate faucets. Dual vanities is an amenity not often found in accessible hotel rooms. The sinks measured 35 inches high, with 29.5 inches of clearance below.
One point of frustration was the toilet, which sat low and measured just 16.75 inches from floor to seat. Despite its low height (a challenge for me as a power wheelchair user), it had both a wall mounted grab bar and a folding grab bar that was 29 inches tall when in use. There was space to park my wheelchair directly alongside the toilet for a safe lateral transfer.

The roll-in shower was enclosed with a sliding glass door, but the opening was wide enough to accommodate my power wheelchair. It featured an awkwardly placed seat that folded down from the back wall. The seat was 18.5 inches tall and measured 17.5 inches wide, with a depth of 12 inches. A handheld shower head and water controls were located on the adjacent side wall and within reach of the seat. Grab bars were placed on the side wall at a height of 30 inches, and there was a folding grab bar as well.
While the roll-in shower was not my preferred design, I was able to make it work and noted that it would also be accessible to travelers bringing their own shower chair.

Final Thoughts
The Hotel Indigo Barcelona Plaza Catalunya boasts a high level of guest room accessibility and a location that is extremely convenient for exploration and access to wheelchair accessible public transportation. The price point makes is fair, and is the primary factor that led me to discover this hotel. The stylish design choices typical of the Hotel Indigo brand increased my comfort, and I encourage you to consider this property during your next trip to Barcelona!
