United States citizens do not require a visa to visit Thailand for 30 days or less if arriving by air. If arriving by land or sea, the visa exemption is for 15 days or less . Entry via the visa exemption requires the following:
- A valid passport with at least six months validity.
- Proof of an onward or return airline ticket.
Those traveling to Thailand on a visa exemption may request a 7-day extension at the Thai Immigration Bureau for a fee of 1,900 Thai Baht (THB). The Thai Immigration Bureau offices in Bangkok are located at:

For stays greater than 30 days, U.S. citizens should apply in advance for a Tourist Visa. The Tourist Visa must be used within 90 days of the date of issue and permits a stay of up to 60 days. This visa can be extended for 30 days twice. Each extension requires a 1,900 THB fee be paid to the Thai Immigration Bureau. The Tourist Visa requires the following:
- A valid passport with at least six months validity.
- A completed and signed Thai Visa application form.
- Two passport style photographs.
- Copies of round-trip airfare tickets or a travel itinerary.
- Copy of the applicant’s most recent bank statement showing sufficient funds ($700 per person or $1,500 per family).
