Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino International Airport (FCO) is the largest and busiest airport in Italy and a major hub for air transportation in the region. Located about 30 kilometers from the city center, the airport is easy to reach using public transportation or taxis. In 2022, the airport was awarded the “Best Airport Award” by Airport Council International Europe, which recognizes airports serving more than 40 million passengers annually.

The airport consists of two terminals, Terminal 1 (Gates A1-A83), and Terminal 3 (Gates E1-E52). Generally, Terminal 1 is used for intra-European flights, while Terminal 3 is used for both intra-European flights and international (non-Schengen) arrivals/departures. An automated people mover (“SkyBridge”) operates from Terminal 3 to a satellite consisting of gates E31-E44.

Disability Assistance Services at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport
Disability assistance services should be requested prior to travel and through your airline. Consult this list of wheelchair assistance contacts at major airlines. If you are traveling with a personal wheelchair, it is possible to gate-check the device, whether it is manual or powered.

Passengers arriving to the airport who have a wheelchair stored in cargo should be reconnected with their mobility equipment either in the terminal or inside the AmbuLift. On long-haul flights from the United States to Rome, I have collected my wheelchair plane side in the AmbuLift, then transferred into a wheelchair accessible van that took me to the terminal building, where I cleared immigration, collected my luggage and passed through customs into the arrivals hall.

The airport is a modern facility, with wheelchair accessible bathrooms throughout. The adapted bathrooms feature a roll-under sink and toilet with grab bars.
Wheelchair accessible transportation between Rome and Fiumicino Airport
The airport is connected to Roma Termini station in central Rome via the wheelchair accessible Leonardo Express train, operated by Trenitalia. The journey from FCO Airport to Termini Station takes just 32 minutes. The trains are comfortable, offering dedicated wheelchair spaces, an accessible toilet, a luggage rack and power outlets.

The airport train station is located outside of the Terminal 3 arrivals hall. Signs guide travelers across the street — it is a very short walk. Tickets can be purchased from a kiosk inside the train station. The cost of a one-way ticket is 14 EUR. Upon reaching the platform, flag down the train’s conductor, who will deploy a portable ramp to bridge the gap between the station platform and rail car.
For more information on riding the Leonardo Express, visit the Trenitalia website.

If you’d like to organize a private wheelchair accessible transfer to or from the airport in Rome, reach out to the folks at Outreacholidays.com, who have multiple vans with a heavy-duty wheelchair lift and securement straps.
