My first “trip” to Poland took place in 2021, when I crossed the border between Görlitz, Germany and Zgorzelec, Poland — given that I was only in Polish territory for 15 minutes, I decided not to count it as a country visited.
That changed last spring, when I visited Poland for real, traveling to Warsaw on a two-day trip that turned into four after some bolts on my wheelchair broke (Side note: Friday night is the worst time for a wheelchair to break down in Warsaw, as you won’t find a repair shop open until Monday!).
Despite the broken wheelchair (my backrest wouldn’t stay upright), I was still able to use it over short distances. One night in the hotel lobby, another guest stopped me to say hello. We had passed by each other a few times during my stay and he wanted to introduce himself. The conversation that followed left me speechless — through it, I became privy to the planning of a clandestine operation that sought to transfer nuclear weapons from the Russian Federation to Ukraine.
