Have you heard of Amazon? The retailer is holding its annual Prime Day, a 36-hour extravaganza of sales that runs through 11:59 p.m. PST on Tuesday, July 17th. While the deals are only open to members of the Amazon Prime program, you can snag a free trial of Amazon Prime for 30 days to get access. If you are a college student, you’ll get a free trial period of 6 months! Just be sure to cancel your trial membership before it renews, unless you want to keep it.
Among the thousands and thousands of deals going on right now, I’ve picked out 7 that are just too good to pass up. Not only will you save money, but you’ll collect some awesome gear to make your travels more enjoyable.
Full disclosure, I am an Amazon marketing partner, and the links on this page are affiliate links. If you make a purchase through one of these links, I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. While you don’t have to use these links, I really appreciate your support of my blog if you do. The small commissions really help cover the costs of keeping this website online. Thank you so much!
Bose QC 25 Noise-canceling headphones — 58% off!
Apart from my wheelchair and passport, my Bose QuietComfort headphones are more attached to me than any other thing. They make airplane flights quieter, produce excellent quality sounds and hug my ears perfectly.

These $300 headphones are being sold for $125. When I purchased mine, I paid full freight. They are worth every penny of $300. But when priced at $125, you have 175 more reasons to buy them. I have never seen them cheaper, and people are selling them used on eBay for $200. Brand new for $125 this Prime Day. Buy them and thank me later. 🙂
Amazon Fire Tablets from $29!
Long flight or long layover? Pass the time with a Fire Tablet. The Fire 7 with 8 gb of storage is a steal at just $29. That seems like a ridiculous price for a device that is 10 times more powerful than my first PC (it’s probably much more than 10x), but that’s where we are with technology in 2018.
I own an Apple iPad, which is way overpriced and not particularly useful. I only use it to watch movies, which is something you can do with a a Fire tablet. You can also download movies from the extensive Amazon library to take with you on the go, including movies that are included free with a Prime membership.
Speaking of movies & TV shows included free with Prime, let me recommend two to watch. The movie Shutter Island will make you question reality and think deeply. And the TV show Goliath, an Amazon Original starring Billy Bob Thornton, is really, really good.
Lowest prices ever on Kindle e-readers
I am a fervent reader. In middle school, I read the complete works of William Shakespeare. It’s the truth, and my middle school librarian, who I adoringly nicknamed Madam Pince, will verify. Did you get the Harry Potter reference?
Anyway, after my car accident, I found it difficult to read books having only one hand. Try keeping a 600-page paperback by Robert Jordan open with just one hand! The Amazon Kindle was my salvation. I had stood opposed to e-books for the longest time, but I now consider them to be the best thing ever. And the Kindle makes reading accessible to so many more of us.

This Prime Day, you can score the Kindle for just $49, or the Kindle Paperwhite (my favorite) for just $79. That’s the lowest price I’ve ever seen on the Paperwhite, which normally retails for $119.
I plan to start reading my next book tonight, the biography of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, written by Joan Biskupic. Given that the U.S. Senate will soon consider the nomination of a new justice, I thought it a good time to read more about the court’s history. O’Connor was the first woman to serve on the high court, so I hope it will be an interesting read!
What will you read on your Kindle?
Anker PowerCore Fusion for $17.99 — 31% off
I have multiple battery packs to keep my phone, camera, watch and laptop charged. Anker is my favorite brand, as their products have been the most reliable and lasted the longest.
Amazon has put a lot of their products on sale for Prime Day, but the PowerCore Fusion is new to me. It has a built-in plug, so that you can charge it directly in a wall outlet without an adapter or extra cable. I’ve just purchased one and look forward to trying it out. It’s so difficult to keep track of all those USB cables and power adapters!
FitBit Alta HR — 40% off!
Yes, I own a FitBit. You’re probably wondering what use a triple amputee who uses a power wheelchair might have for a FitBit. I promise, you’re not alone.
The truth is, I won my FitBit in a drawing at a conference earlier this year. When they called my name and I rolled up to collect my FitBit, there were definitely murmurs in the audience.

Primarily, I use it as a watch. It’s pretty stylish, and goes well with my casual outfits. But it also gives me some awesome insight into my sleep patterns and heart rate. For manual wheelchair users, it would be a lot more useful for measuring your physical activity.
If you don’t have any interest in a FitBit, no worries. But the Prime Day deal has the Alta HR model priced at an extremely attractive $89.95, a savings of $60 from the normal price of $149.95. If you’ve been interested in a FitBit but wary of the price, this is a great deal!
Ancestry DNA Test for $99.99 — 67% off!
They advertise those DNA tests to determine your ancestry on TV all the time. I’ve never bit, because they’re costly and I have a well developed family tree.
But, at 67% off, I can afford to entertain my curiosity. The 23andMe DNA test is a penny short of a Benjamin, and promises to reveal your “Ancestry Composition” with “detailed percentages from regions around the world – now with 150+ Ancestry Regions.”
One thing I love about travel is visiting the countries where my ancestors were from. My ancestors were Europeans, coming from England, Scotland, Poland and, dare I say it, Russia. :p Perhaps this DNA test will reveal some new links that I wasn’t aware of.
Luggage, Travel Pillows, etc., etc.
There are literally thousands of deals. Too many to go through, and many last only a few hours. The first six I’ve mentioned last all day, but I encourage you to explore the full list of travel products discounted for Prime Day to see if any of the limited-time offers appeal to you.
Happy hunting! And let me know in the comments if you snag any great offers!
