Visitors to the nation’s capital will be pleased to know that there are a large number of wheelchair accessible hotel rooms in Washington, D.C. with roll-in showers, grab bars and other accessibility features.

As a wheelchair user and frequent visitor to the District of Columbia, I have personally stayed at more than 30 hotels and resorts in the Washington, D.C. metro area and have found many of them to be wheelchair-friendly. In this article, I’ve pulled from that list of 30+ properties to share information, pictures and measurements of wheelchair accessible hotels in D.C. and the surrounding cities in Maryland and Virginia (the DC Metro Area). This list of ADA accessible hotels in America’s capital city is not exhaustive, but should get you started in your search for an accommodation that will meet your accessibility needs. I have personally stayed at every hotel listed on this page.

Bethesda Marriott

The Bethesda Marriott is a newly remodeled hotel located in Bethesda, Maryland – a short distance from the nation’s capital. 399 rooms and 8 suites are spread across 15 floors of a hotel that attracts both business travelers and tourists. Located in close proximity to I-270 and I-495, the Bethesda Marriott is especially convenient for those traveling with their own vehicle. Nearby city bus routes offer public transportation connections to the Bethesda Medical Station on the DC Metro’s Red line.

My accessible guest room featured a roll-in shower with a built-in seat, grab bars and a handheld shower spray unit. The bed was on a platform base. To read a complete review of my June 2016 stay at the Bethesda Marriott, click here.

Courtyard Alexandria Old Town/Southwest

The Courtyard Alexandria Old Town/Southwest hotel is located within walking distance of the Eisenhower Ave Metrorail station. Routinely priced around $100 per night, it is a fairly affordable accommodation in the Arlington, Virginia area.

The hotel’s bed height is typical of the Courtyard brand — high, but with clear space under the bed to accommodate a patient transfer hoist. The roll-in shower in my guest room (#418) did not have a built-in seat, but the plastic chair provided was sturdy.

For more information on this hotel or to make a booking, visit the Courtyard Alexandria website.

Courtyard Arlington Crystal City/Reagan National Airport

The Courtyard Arlington Crystal City hotel is located less than a mile away from the entrance to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, DC’s main airport. The hotel’s complimentary airport shuttle is not wheelchair accessible, but it is easy to request a wheelchair taxi at the airport taxi stand. Getting a ride back to the airport is more difficult, so it is important to make a reservation well in advance. The cost of taxi rides between the hotel and airport should be covered by the hotel, per ADA regulations.

Plastic square bench in roll-in shower.

The roll-in shower has a built-in seat, but it is attached to the wall opposite the water controls and handheld showerhead. A square plastic bench with no backrest was provided for use instead. For more information or to make a booking at this hotel, visit the Courtyard Arlington Crystal City – Reagan National Airport website.

Crowne Plaza Greenbelt – Washington DC

The Crowne Plaza Greenbelt hotel (formerly the Greenbelt Marriott) is located in Greenbelt, Maryland, approximately 8 miles outside of Washington D.C. and less than one mile from the Greenbelt and College Park Metro stations. The hotel operates a complimentary shuttle to areas within a 3-mile radius, but the shuttle vehicle was not wheelchair accessible during my stay. The hotel is responsible for arranging alternate and equivalent wheelchair accessible shuttle transportation.

Roll-in shower and bathroom sink.

The hotel has undergone a remodel after its rebranding from a Marriott to a Crowne Plaza hotel, and I haven’t seen the updated design. Typically, the changes are not significant during a remodel of an older hotel, and when I stayed at this property under the Marriott brand, the roll-in shower did not meet ADA standards. The built-in shower seat was height-adjustable (great feature!), but it was attached to the wrong wall. The rest of the bathroom was nicely accessible, with a roll-under sink and a toilet with grab bars.

For more information about this hotel, visit the Crowne Plaza Greenbelt website.

Fairfield Inn & Suites Dulles Airport Chantilly

The Fairfield Inn & Suites Dulles Airport Chantilly is located in Chantilly, Virginia, about one mile away from the Dulles Expo Center. I stayed at this hotel during an Abilities Expo that was held at that expo center. The hotel offers a free shuttle to/from the Dulles Airport (IAD). The hotel’s shuttle van is not wheelchair accessible, but the property is obligated to provide alternative and equivalent wheelchair accessible shuttle service upon request.

Sink and roll-in shower.

I stayed in Room #123. The room was spacious and easy to move around in with my power wheelchair. The bathroom was accessible, featuring a roll-under sink and a toilet with grab bars and space to park a wheelchair directly alongside the commode for a safe transfer. The roll-in shower was not designed to ADA specifications and there was no built-in shower seat; a plastic stool was provided instead.

Hyatt Centric Arlington

The Hyatt Centric Arlington hotel is located steps from the DC Metrorail’s Rosslyn station, and is in a convenient location for easy access to the airport and the center of DC via the wheelchair-friendly metro system. I’ve stayed multiple times at this hotel and I do like it a lot.

I’ve stayed in rooms with both roll-in showers and ADA bathtubs, but both set-ups have the controls and handheld showerhead out of reach. A portable plastic shower chair has been provided upon request, but I would prefer the hotel to be ADA compliant. Hyatt Regency Crystal City at Reagan National Airport

The Hyatt Regency Crystal City is a hotel in close proximity to the DCA Airport, and which offers complimentary shuttle service to/from the airport and the nearby DC Metro station. I have stayed at this hotel several times over the years while attending conferences hosted in its ballroom and meeting spaces.

The accessibility of the guest rooms is moderate. Roll-in showers are not ADA compliant and a portable shower chair is provided. The sink is easy to roll under, but there is no countertop – only the sink. The toilet has the required grab bars.

Marriott Marquis Washington DC Hotel

Located at the heart of DC’s Mt. Vernon Square neighborhood and just across the street from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, the Marriott Marquis Washington DC is one of the favorite hotels for business travelers and a hotel that I have frequently stayed at.

The guest rooms are spacious and feature beds that measure 25.5 inches tall from the floor to the top of the mattress. The roll-in showers include wall-mounted and folding shower seats, but the ones I have seen were mounted backwards. The Westin Alexandria Old Town

If you’re looking for a nice hotel close to DC, you can’t go wrong with The Westin Alexandria Old Town. The hotel is located on Courthouse Square, directly across from the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. It is within walking distance of two DC Metro stations, Eisenhower Ave (0.4 miles) and King Street – Old Town (0.5 miles). You’ll love the charming surroundings of Old Town Alexandria.

My guest room (#942) was spacious enough to accommodate my power wheelchair, and was very accessible in other ways as well. The roll-in shower was accessible, with a built-in (and height-adjustable!) shower chair, a toilet with grab bars and a roll-under bathroom sink. The Westin Alexandria Old Town was a comfortable place to stay, and a property that I would certainly recommend.

The Westin Washington, D.C. City Center

Located at Thomas Circle in downtown DC, The Westin Washington DC City Center hotel is oftentimes surprisingly affordable compared to other full-service hotels in the District. The hotel is only half a mile from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, which makes it a great alternative to other hotels when prices are high. It’s also a great choice for tourists, at only half a mile from Lafayette Park and The White House. Two metro stations are close by the hotel, McPherson Square (0.4 miles, Orange/Silver lines) and Farragut North (0.5 miles, Red line), providing easy access to all parts of the city.

The hotel room that I was assigned had an odd shape, but it was accessible and fairly spacious. The bathroom featured a roll-under sink and a toilet with space alongside to park a wheelchair. The roll-in shower had a built-in seat and controls within reach. It really was fantastic!
